Breastfeeding Awareness Week Events

Are you/ your group hosting an event for Breastfeeding Awareness Week this year?

Would you like to share information about it on the DBM page?

Here's a flyer for an event in Brighton I was sent:

I think the discussions on cake-eating may be of particular interest....

Feel free to post any others onto the DBM Facebook page and add them to the growing list on the discussion tab.

Particularly if they involve cake.

  2. Hi

Very helpful blog with so many bf issues answered.

I could not bf my first born(2006)...is 5 now.Have an infant now(7 weeks) who is completely bf.Would it help if I gave some of the excess pumped milk to my 5 yr old to make up for all his gut issues?

    Appreciate your answer.

  3. Hi- And massive congratulations on your newborn! Absolutely- giving your older child expressed milk will do nothing but benefit him! He will gain some acquired immunity (a child's immune system is not 'matured' until at least 7 years old) and worldwide, 5 is not 'old' to be getting breastmilk at all! In fact the average age of weaning worldwide is around 4, with wide variation around that. You could express into a cup or use the milk in a fruit smoothie (as a friend of mine did for her son who also had gut problems). Children like it because it tastes sweet. 100% if I were in your shoes I'd do it. Stem cells have been discovered in breastmilk, not to mention all the other amazing properties it has, some of which are vital to good gut health. You will be supporting his gut bacteria, and helping to plug the 'leaks'. If you would like to find out more about gut healing there are some amazing people doing work in this area and I'd be happy to put you in touch. There is a reason why people who are ill will pay for human milk and you have it for free! I'm not able to give you all the links I'd like as I'm replying from my phone- but I'd love to post your question on the Facebook group- I know you would find reassurance there. With all good wishes, Anne.

  5. Hi there - will post your question on the group here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dispelling-Breastfeeding-Myths/103045073084559 Not everything on the wall is visible unless you sign in to FB and click 'like', though. Here are a few links for you to read: Stem cells-
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/stem-cells-could-be-the-secret-reason-why-breast-is-best-1825558.html Health Benefits- http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/473223/can_adults_benefit_from_drinking_breast.html Natural Age of weaning- http://www.kathydettwyler.org/detwean.html Research about HAMLET (substance in breast milk) killing cancer cells: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/04/100419132403.htm One book which deals with some of the issues you're asking about (the health benefits) amongst many others, is the book 'breastfeeding older children' by ann sinnott. Although you wouldn't be directly breastfeeding your child, there is heaps of info in there about why breastmilk is good for children well beyond what our culture considers and 'acceptable' age. I'll repost your question to the DBM group later today. xo anne
